Spring In The Air March 27, 2011

Filed under: around the house — hokiecaryn @ 8:58 pm

Cardinal in our cherry tree.

Lo! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.

Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.

The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance.

Arise, come, my darling;
my beautiful one, come with me.

- Song of Solomon 2:11-13

Okay, first of all, I know that this passage of scripture is not just about the changing seasons of weather outside, but I do find it quite fitting experiencing our first true winter-to-spring transition in many years now that we are back “in the north.”  The rain isn’t quite gone yet, but spring is on the way.  Despite a wintry mix this weekend, and plummeting temperatures, in general we have been truly beckoned by the call of Spring outside our doors in the last couple of weeks.  It feels good for our souls to have this physical transition from winter to spring happen all around us, and we look forward with hope and anticipation of what’s to come.

Today had its own interest and beauty, although the damp cold temperatures were unwelcome. I snapped a few photos of the trees and plants in our yard that were beginning to bloom due to the warm temperatures and the spring showers.  The grass is greening up and the blossoms are bursting forth.  The birds are swarming our bird feeder and we’re noticing more varieties than we have seen this winter.  Our son is really enjoying all the activity, too, but he and I can hardly keep the feeder filled!

This is our first spring in the new house, and we are thankful for a pretty well landscaped yard, but know not what might come up where!  So the excitement for seeing what may bloom forth from each corner of the yard is an exciting adventure in itself.  We’ve done massive pruning to several shrubs and trees, hoping to encourage even more wonderful fruits and flowers this year.

Another Winter Passing

In many ways, I am noting that this Spring seems to be bringing a true passing of a different kind of winter in my life, and my family’s.  A year and a few months past my mother’s passing, and a year after beginning intensive counseling to recover from the difficulties and struggles of my past few years, I am feeling at a very different place (physically, spiritually, and emotionally).

In Florida, the skies were so big and open, you could see storms coming at their fast pace towards you.  Often you could not predict if they’d come directly over you or pass to the side, but you could watch it happen right before your eyes all the same. We watched the fronts of hurricanes come upon us, as the winds began to gust more strongly, and the circular wall of clouds that wrapped across the sky came with great foreboding.  But of course, many days in summer, great storms of dark ominous clouds, with their frightful fingers sticking down and their green cast, also came and swept up at a quick pace.

While I became somewhat used to these occurrences, and gradually less panicked at first sight of them, my heart always reacted, wondering what the seemingly “end times” caliber storm might bring.  Often the worst would pass just aside from you, and you could sit and watch the storm rage down on the next county over (or next neighborhood).  Anyway, with that imagery so engraved in my brain, the figurative storms that have passed over me in the recent past are palpable for me, and I can see them now in the distance behind me.  I was not left untouched by them, although I know that many of the fragments and scattered debris have been picked up, and many wounds have begun to heal. I have cleared them and come to the bright sky on the other side.  Not to say there are no potential storms ahead. But I am thankful at least for these to have past. Lo, the winter has past, and the spring beckons me forward into new life.

Literal New Life Ahead

Caryn entering the third trimester

We’re counting down to June for other reasons aside from weather since that is the due date for our baby girl. Entering the third trimester, I am starting to get more excited about the coming of this little gal. It has been much harder to think about it than the first since I have a busy time keeping up with our everyday life and our toddler!  It’s such an active and exciting stage for him, it hardly leaves me time for dreaming about little baby girl.  I think it’s now really sinking in about her being a girl and I’m starting to be really excited for that aspect of our new adventure.

We are starting to receive clothes here and there from folks handing them down, and for that I am excited and thankful. It’s quite a mysterious new world of girls baby clothes: leggings, dresses, skirts, and frills.  There sure is a LOT of pink, but I’m glad to bring it on.  I’m glad that a sort of eclectic style in girls clothes seem to be popular; I hope that will continue and give me some grace for learning how all these little mini-outfits work together!  Little girls’ world, here we come!

Are you a BOurgeois BOhemian June 27, 2010

I ran across a reference to the term “Bobo” or “Bourgeois Bohemian” today. I feel like I’ve seen it before, but hadn’t quite figured out what it meant.  There are several statements and quotes throughout the article of different people defining the subculture; this one struck me.

Ad from Rich Hippie clothing store in TX.

It’s hard to miss them: The epitome of casual ‘geek chic’ and organised within the warranty of their Palm Pilots*, they sip labour-intensive café lattes, chat on sleek cellphones and ponder the road to enlightenment. In the US they worry about the environment as they drive their gas-guzzling sports utility vehicles to emporiums of haute design to buy a $50 titanium spatula; they think about their tech stocks as they explore specialty shops for Tibetan artefacts in Everest-worthy hiking boots. They think nothing of laying out $5 for a wheatgrass muff, much less $500 for some alternative rejuvenation at the day-spa – but don’t talk about raising their taxes.

Mommy Favorites January 7, 2010

As we are already approaching 11 months with our first child, I thought I would write a post about my “mommy favorites” — things that I found to be essential in helping us survive the first little one.  [I may add more and add photos later!]

I start by acknowledging my situation and preferences are potentially very different from the next mommy.  We are frugal and in a fairly small house, living on one income.  We had a son who was colicky for 3 months, never really enjoyed tummy time until he was ready to start inching around, and is just his own baby — every baby is so different in many ways!

We had plenty of preconceived notions, fears, and exciting wonderful things we looked forward to.  We had some definite and some pseudo opinions; many of those have changed drastically since we had our baby!

I’m going to include here some of my favorite things from our experience.  I hope that it might help someone out there.  I had several great moms send me their short list and I found it helpful.  I haven’t really included toys. That’s a whole other post! (more…)

Boys will be Boys September 4, 2009

Filed under: around the house,Parenthood — hokiecaryn @ 10:55 am

And babies will be babies. I know some of the things Josiah is up to these days are typical of a lot of babies, especially with the strong-willed, get-going, active personality like I believe he has.  I also know I’m “in for it” with the precocious boy thing.  As I’ve been reading “Bringing Up Boys” by Dr. James Dobson, it has been a very good reminder of how boys are different, and what might be in store for us. Not that they won’t all have different personalities and interests, but knowing his father, I’m guessing Josiah is going to be an in the mud kind of kid.

I got a great deal on a Tonka dump truck and a kid rug with a construction theme on it at a consignment sale. (Of course, dually appropriate because of my previous experience and interest in civil engineering and construction).  Anyway, I figured the rug would be good at this point to put down in the Living Room or his room so he can crawl on something other than the laminate floors.  (well, learn to crawl anyway).

But a story about the kid’s rug.  I noticed it seemed a little dingy, but I thought some cleaning might spruce it up, and that basically it was going to get dirty anyway, so why not?  I took it into the bathroom and hosed it off, scrubbed with green cleaner, and then kept hosing it with the shower faucet.

Tons of dirt and grime ran out of the carpet and down the drain. As I sat there for a few minutes just watching this grime wash down the drain.  I had a feeling that this image might well represent part of the next dozen years of my life…watching the tons of dirt and grime wash down the drain.  I don’t know…that was just the experience I had as I sat there; and I wasn’t down about it or anything, just preparing myself with a deep breath for what may be to come raising a little guy.

The carpet did come out much brighter and cleaner! it was very exciting.

The next story came while I was taking photos of some of my sewing projects.

I’ll let these pictures tell the story…

Yes, that’s him looking cute, spitting up and then playing with it. I set the camera down before he started tasting it. Yummy. Fun times…fun times.  I love the little rugrat, though.

My Adventures in Cloth Diapering, Part 2 August 29, 2009

100_7094This is a follow up post to Part 1.

Now we are entering a new phase. At six months and almost 18 lbs, Josiah has pretty much grown out (I think more length than anything) the Fuzzi Bunz diapers I had.  It is also MUCH harder to do the prefolds on him as we had been doing because he has started to want to be up on all fours on the changing table, and I was some days having to change him upside down.  That phase has passed for the most part (for now) and he’s letting me put him on his back again.  But two major changes now have made me want to take the next step in diapering. My Adventures in Cloth Diapering, Part 1 August 29, 2009

cloth_diaper_webI did a very controversial thing — I chose to cloth diaper! Gasp.  I know, many people think I’m crazy.  And maybe I just am!  Ha.  It’s amazing because the first three months with an extremely colicky child, you’d think I was insane to add more difficulty to being a diapering mom.  But, I have actually found the system to work for us, and keep experimenting along the way trying new things. I’ve had some room in my life to research and refine this for our family. Who knows what it will be like for any future children. But Josiah is a cloth-diapered child most of the time.

My journey began with a few people suggesting it and I thought they were crazy, and after several conversations like this on topics of childbirth and family, I realize we’re all pseudo crazy to take on this amazingly wonderful journey of parenthood. So why not give it a go?!  Hey, I mean I did deliver Josiah in a bathtub! (more…)

Sewing Projects August 25, 2009

Cover_web

I’ve taken some time to do some homemaker projects with the sewing machine my mom gave me.  I haven’t sewn much in a long time.  I had a couple machines people gave me and none of them seemed to work quite right, or it could very well have been user error!! My mom gave me one that’s pretty easy to use; the newer models seem to have fewer knobs, for instance, that have to do with tension settings which I think was where my problem was.  Anyway, I managed to do a few small projects.

Among them, I figured the first might be to make a cloth cover for my sewing machine since if I was going to do projects, it might get left out in the living room. I though this would help it hide away and look fashionable if someone did happen to notice it!  I did some searching online.  You can pretty much make one by measuring the dimensions of your machine. I found this on a blog called Spool Sewing, and I made some embellishment changes from the ones they did, using some cording; I added this part just to make it even more difficult. Ha! Anyway I had had this fabric for ages, and glad to finally use it somewhere it will be seen!

KimonoThen I ventured on to some smaller projects that I may post about in a different post.  Then I tried out kid’s clothing!   (more…)

The Davis Veggie Garden July 10, 2009

So I know there’s a lot of hype about sustainability, going green, and organic food. We’re not ones to jump on bandwagons, and I think a lot of the “popular” routes of living green and organic and all that are kind of false.  Like electric cars that require mining of rare earth elements, or “organic” produce that’s grown and shipped from overseas.  These oxymorons of sorts are not true green and sustainable living.  So anyway, without just jumping on the wagon because it’s hip, Scott and I have decided we’d like to do some things to be more self-sufficient.  Local is good, sustainability is good, and growing things is good for us in many many ways.

We decided we’d like our children to know where our food comes from.  While I’m not quite ready to slaughter my own meat, yet, I thought growing some tomatoes, beans and cucumbers could be a good start!!

We started putting Josiah to bed earlier and found ourselves having time together again and wanting to spend it well.  When Scott’s not studying his Greek, we’re often kind of wasted from the day and not sure what to do.  Doing the garden in the evenings and on weekend mornings has been a really enjoyable way to share something together, besides Josiah.   We’re growing a vegetable garden from seeds, trying to get some seedlings going

Growing things in Florida is pretty hit or miss, but so far, so good.  They are actually already much larger than these photos!

We set up a little mini-irrigation system for our seedlings in containers through the intense heat of the mid-summer.  We’re hoping to sustain the little guys until late summer, so we can plant and get a harvest this fall/winter.  The growing season in Florida is very flip-flop from most places in the country, so that’s been something to learn!

We look forward to seeing these guys when we get back. I’m half worried that the cucumbers will have born fruit the size of our house at the rate they’re growing.  But mostly I hope they’ll be healthy little plants that we can plant in our new boxes when we come back and see some harvest later.  We’ll have lots of different things so we can see what does well and what we like.  We’re planning to build “square foot garden” raised beds.  Its’ kind of a new trend, but it’s really smart and I think will work well for our sandy soil to help give them some decent stuff to grow in.  Most square foot garden beds recommend using wood; since we’re in Florida and even pressure treated wood disintegrates after a year, we’ve come up with a creative idea to try to form the beds. If it works, we’ll talk about it here!

We’ll see and we’ll keep you posted!

My Shadow June 26, 2009

This morning Josiah and I had a most glorious little stroll through the neighborhood. It has been so ghastly outside in recent weeks and it’s been hard having a baby who loves to be outside and not wanting to go. But this morning, we took a nice stroll. There was a bit of a cool breeze, the puffy white clouds were moving quickly by in the beautiful Florida sky. I guess it’s only about 80. Now, before Florida, hearing it’d be 80 degrees at 8 in the morning would have turned me off. But after what the last couple of weeks have been like, that was refreshingly cool! So we enjoyed it.

Josiah has found his shadow. I think he’s seen shadows for a long time…even when he was a little lump that would just lay there in my lap while we were outside in the mornings to keep him from crying. I think he saw our shadow against the wall. Anyway, this morning, the whole world was going on around him, and he focused behind us on his shadow the whole time (well, in front of us on the first leg because of where the sun was!).

I remembered a poem from Robert Lewis Stevenson’s “Child’s Garden of Verses” from growing up. So I thought I’d share 2 verses in honor of Josiah liking to watch his shadow.

The child in the poem is somewhat annoyed by the shadow’s “stickiness”, but I know a child would say this and secretly be thankful for a friend who sticks so close. In some ways, Josiah has become our little shadow; mostly mine during the days. But he is so fascinated with Scott now and watching everything he does. I know he’ll be trying to imitate and emulate him as soon as is possible. Right now he’s just soaking it in.

Like our little shadow.

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest thing about him is the way he likes to grow–
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an india-rubber ball,
And he sometimes goes so little that there’s none of him at all…

- My Shadow By Robert Louis Stevenson

4 Month Old Highlights and Happy Father’s Day June 22, 2009

100_6624_edWell, it was a banner weekend in many ways for Josiah. His sleep goes well, and then regresses some, but this weekend he did two nights with consistent long stretches of sleep, which was really nice; probably the best sleep we’ve been able to get so far.

He also over the weekend became much more deliberate in grabbing things. He’d grabbed hold of rings on the bouncy chair for a while now (since May when we were at my parent’s house and got this new bouncy seat), but it was almost like he was able to grasp half-heartedly.  For the first time, I saw him really plan, reach out and grab hold of something, and keep grasping on.

He also has become much more rolly! He’s rolling around and can move around in a circle, but not like rolling over yet. he pulls his legs up, and moves them, kind of throwing his weight, and can manage to move like the hands on a clock kind of in a circle.

The negative is that he’s all OVER the crib. I’ll put him down, and he’ll inch around like an inch worm and end up in all kinds of positions. Definitely had to make the crib very baby proof where as before he wasn’t mobile really. He has almost laughed a couple times when I was playing with him in the mornings, but it was almost like I wasn’t sure.

Sunday he laughed as Scott had him “flying” in the air some. Which was also new that he let us do that…not so sensitive to that 100_6675_edfalling feeling. He loved it and we’re pretty sure a little giggle came out!

This morning, I hadn’t heard a peep from him (VERY unusual) so I went in after waiting a while, and found him happy and awake.  I found something though that petrified me and I almost screamed.  In the dark, he appeared with a ring of dark fluid around his head which in the dark I assumed was blood and I was frantic and almost screamed, but he was wide eyed, happy and smiling up at me. I paused, flipped on the light and realized it was poop all OVER the place. But he was okay. Gosh, that was scary.  I wasn’t even upset about cleaning it up because I was so grateful he was okay!

He’s just growing up so much. it’s quite amazing. So, I know there are many more steps to go, and that we can go backwards sometimes and then forward again. But it was very exciting to see these big highlights all around the same time, and to celebrate Father’s Day and his 4 month b’day! he’s also been VERY interested in Scott especially the last week, watching his every move when he’s home. He likes hearing him talk, and watching him do anything — drink, eat, shave, whatever. It’s very fun to see him take so much interest in his daddy.  A very fun weekend all around for Father’s day and celebrating nearly his 4 month birthday!

100_6400I made letters for his room and after we put them up, he seemed to like them!  My friend Leslie gave me the idea. I’m really happy with them.  It did take two engineers to hang them correctly!

And then here are some fun giggles and smiles:

Keeping Up Apperances, Installment 1 December 31, 2008

While I haven’t named them that here, I like to call around the house updates our “Keeping up Appearances” section. If you have not seen the britcom by this same name, you don’t have to, but we kind of got into it some in preparing for our trip to England last year. For my sake and yours, we can be thankful that I am nothing like Hyacinth Bucket (that’s “bouquet” to you!). But anyway, here goes a household update…

We got close to completing our master bath just before my folks came at Christmas. Scott has done a great job with it. We just have some finishing to do – caulk, make sure the sink and shower are sealed, and finish putting up towel racks, the light fixture, etc. I think it looks awesome, and with all of our work, has become a much larger, usable bathroom than what it started out as. I can’t wait to fully use it! Here are some photos!

Bathroom Remodel 12/2008

I also got to working on a project that was supposed to be an anniversary project for us/Scott, but….that was May and this is December, but it’s done! Finally a piece of graphic art up in the house done by me!! I am really happy with it. The project uses lettering from a company called Uppercase Living. I prepped the canvas (textured with stucco paint) and did the stenciling and layout. Scott hung it for me! :) yey!

Uppercase Living project 2

At some point we’ll get to decorating and preparing the baby room. We’re running out of time, I know, but I also know that he won’t notice any of it until he’s much older! :) So we’re just taking things one step at a time. We do have some of the pieces to put into place…but it required completing the bathroom and getting the toilet out of our second bedroom before we could really make any progress! Ah, home ownership…
